Foothill High School Cougar Band

Founded in 1991, the Foothill High School Instrumental Music Department has a strong reputation of excellence in the North State. The department offers award-winning concert bands, two strong jazz ensembles, an elite marching band, a fan-favorite drumline as well as various other brass, woodwind and percussion ensembles.

The Foothill High School Symphonic Band is one of two concert bands offered at FHS. Over the last ten years, the band has grown to the 78 students enrolled this year. Our Symphonic Band swept the many instrumental categories at the 2007 and 2008 Heritage Festivals. We consistently perform at an elite level locally, scoring unanimous Superior Ratings at the CMEA Region II Instrumental Music Festival nine years consecutively.

The bands are active in the school as a pep band; performing at all home football games (featuring entertaining halftime shows) and several basketball games each year. In addition to our concert band, field show, and pep band duties, our marching band serves the community in numerous community parades. The Cougar Band has won or placed second in the local Redding Rodeo Parade eight years in a row. Since the creation of a flag team six years ago, our FHS Flag Team (under the direction of parent volunteer Lisa Siem) has won the Rodeo Parade six consecutive years.

Our jazz program has also grown to become one of the North State’s best - Our top jazz band has recieved high honors at the Heritage, Fullerton, Santa Cruz, Reno and Folsom Jazz Festivals. This jazz ensemble also serves as the Club Cougar Orchestra during the month of February. The eight-night show features the orchestra performing 3 hours of Swing-Era jazz in a Chicago night-club setting. The show has a bit of everything: A complete 4-course meal, dancers, singers, actors…and the Club Cougar Orchestra!

Our musicians are active in their desire to perform music in small ensembles. Currently, we feature a brass quintet, woodwind quintet and a trombone quartet. Many of these musicians seek out performances in solo and ensemble festivals, community bands and honor bands. Many of our graduates are enrolled in junior colleges and universities as music majors. Several more FHS Band alumni are performing in community or collegiate concert and pep bands because they love music.
